How to Choose a Renovation Company You Can Trust
5 April 20265 min readAdvice
Everyone knows someone with a renovation horror story — a job that ran over, a quote that crept up, or a tradesperson who vanished. A little due diligence up front goes a long way. Here’s what to look for.
Insurance and guarantees
Ask whether the company carries public liability insurance and whether their workmanship is guaranteed. A business that stands behind its work in writing is a business that takes it seriously.
One team, one point of contact
Projects go wrong in the gaps between trades. A company that keeps its key trades in-house — or at least gives you a single point of contact who owns the whole job — is far easier to deal with than coordinating separate contractors yourself.
Clear, itemised quotes
A good quote is written and itemised, so you can see exactly what’s included. Be wary of vague one-line prices, and of quotes that are dramatically cheaper than the rest — the difference usually reappears later as “extras”.
Communication and reputation
Notice how they communicate from the first call: do they turn up when they say they will, and explain things clearly? Combine that with local reviews and word of mouth, and you’ll quickly get a feel for who you can trust.
